Nazarenes around the globe are invited to join Love Your Neighbor, a service project taking place in Indianapolis, Indiana, 9-14 June 2023 in conjunction with the 30th General Assembly. Registration begins in July 2022.

The Love Your Neighbor project will partner teams with local churches in the Indianapolis area during three workdays. The teams will be an extension of those churches, according to Global Work & Witness Coordinator Stephen Sickel. Team members will assist in hosting local evangelism events, preparing food for distribution to the community, cleaning up the surrounding neighborhoods, and participating in light construction.

“We want to partner with the Indianapolis District and the local churches so that whatever we invest in the city is connected to the ongoing work,” Sickel said. “During General Assembly, when we have a lot of reflection inwards, we need to remind ourselves about the reflection outwards.”

The event name is a reminder of Matthew 22:37-40, where Jesus tells his disciples to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” In that passage, Jesus reminds them that the second most important commandment “…is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

“As Nazarenes, we know that the holy life is a life of action,” General Superintendent Carla Sunberg said. “The holy life is also something that we do together in community. That is why we gather together as a global family to serve the people in the neighborhoods of Indianapolis during General Assembly.”

Those who are unable to attend the event in Indianapolis are encouraged to organize a Love Your Neighbor event in their community. Resources will be available for local leaders to set up an event in their church or district, and teams participating in local projects are encouraged to join in the General Assembly worship sessions via livestream.
