The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Department of Athletics announced Daniel Doan was selected as the new head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs. Doan is an MVNU graduate who will be the first head coach in the new era of the tennis program, which will be restarted as a club program this fall with plans to move into varsity status for the 2017-2018 school year.

"We are excited to have Daniel accept the position to coach our men's and women's tennis programs," said Keith Veale, MVNU director of Athletics. "We have a lot of work in order to get these programs up and running, but I believe he is up to the task. Daniel came highly recommended from his work experiences on campus and beyond. Having a year to network in the tennis community and recruit varsity athletes will be the next steps. The construction of a tennis facility will be a great feature to roll out next fall for practices and eventual match competition as we move forward."

Doan looks forward to the challenge ahead. 

"I am very excited to be the new coach of a program that has been non-existent for a little while, especially when it is a sport I love," Doan said. "I'm hopeful for the program and its growth as so many people love the game and now there is an opportunity for student-athletes to compete in tennis at MVNU once again."

Doan was a player at Division II Triway High School in Wooster, Ohio, where he was an All-Conference honoree all four years of his prep career. He is third on the all-time career wins list in school history and helped guide his team to the most single-season wins in Triway history.

"My goal as the new coach is to simply be a motivator and encouraging model for potential athletes and students," Doan said. "There are so many different skill levels of tennis and I just have to remind myself that in the beginning stages of this process, it won't be all about how elite of a program we can build. There is going to be a lot of room for growth and improvement with this new program and I am very excited to be able to share my abilities and experience with those who are interested."

Doan has been an active member of the United States Tennis Association for the past eight years and has competed with a National Tennis Rating Program rating of 4.0-4.5. Doan is currently working on and will complete his Professional Tennis Registry training for a certificate of coaching this summer.

"It is a blessing in and of itself to be able to work with the faculty and staff at MVNU, and the fact that I am about to learn and grow from some of the more dedicated and caring coaches I've interacted with is something special," Doan said. "Many facets of the tennis program are going to be learned on the go, but I know the coaching staff will be there to help me when needed and care for the program and the students involved."
