At the heart of Hanau, Germany, the Church of the Nazarene has become a vital source of support for the local community through its Hospitality Ministry.

Offering a range of essential services – including a soup kitchen, a clothing room, a food recovery program, and food distribution – the church has provided for those in need while fostering a sense of belonging and spiritual growth.

What began as a simple food distribution effort, accompanied by short spiritual reflections, has evolved into a meaningful tradition. Once per month, on the third Saturday, guests gather for a worship service before food or clothing is distributed. This service has become an integral part of the ministry, offering a space where individuals not only receive material support but also experience spiritual care. Over the years, this effort has built deep trust among the guests, who feel seen, valued, and connected to the life of the church.

While the initial goal was to invite guests to the church’s Sunday services, it soon became clear that Saturdays were more accessible. In response, the church began offering these special Saturday services, which have been embraced with enthusiasm.

Guests feel comfortable participating, singing along, clapping, and listening to the sermon, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. During the service, a dedicated children’s program has also been a great success, allowing the kids to enjoy activities while the adults engage in worship.

In addition to the Saturday services, the church offers a monthly food distribution every Wednesday, providing another opportunity for community members to receive support. This additional distribution ensures that even more people in Hanau have access to essential groceries.

The church’s practical outreach remains strong. The soup kitchen offers warm, nutritious meals, while the clothing room provides essential items for those in need. The food recovery program, Essensretter, reduces food waste by collecting surplus food from local businesses and distributing it to the community. These efforts ensure that no one near the church goes without necessities.

Through more than a decade of service, the Church of the Nazarene in Hanau has established itself as a place of trust and care. The combination of worship and hospitality have created a space where guests find food and clothing, a sense of belonging, and a spiritual connection.

At the end of the year, the church hosted a large communal meal for its guests. During this event, the church cooked and served a meal, gave gifts, and celebrated with the guests and their children. They shared the Christmas message that God became human for us in the person of Jesus Christ, so that all who believe in Him may be saved.

This ministry has become a lifeline for many, reflecting the church’s commitment to serving both body and soul.
