Judy Henske Obituary

Judith (Martin) Henske, 79, of Beaverton, Oregon, passed away 14 February 2020. She was a retired missionary, serving in Japan.

Judy was born 13 April 1941, the third child of the late Mary and Theodore “Ted” E. Martin, who was Nazarene pastor and evangelist. Ted was a member of the General Board of the Church of the Nazarene and director of the Nazarene Information Service. He was a regular speaker on the “Showers of Blessing” radio program, and, for many years, senior pastor of Nashville First Church of the Nazarene.

After her father graduated from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, in August 1946, at the age of 5, Judy and her family moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where her father became a pastor until his election as superintendent of the Canada Central District in 1950. At the age of 12, Judy’s mother, Mary, died on 3 November 1953.

When her father accepted the call to pastor First Church of the Nazarene in Hammond, Indiana, in 1955, the family relocated again.

From 1972 to 1986, Judy served as a missionary in Japan for the Church of the Nazarene, where she taught at Japan Christian Junior College. While on furlough, from 1978 to 1979 Judy was enrolled at Nazarene Theological Seminary.

She returned to Japan, where she met Lowell Gillon Henske, who was also serving as a missionary for the Church of the Nazarene. On 10 October 1987, at the age of 46, Judy married Lowell at Nazarene Theological Seminary.

They served together in Japan, where Lowell was mission director during the earthquake of 1995. By 2003 they retired to Beaverton, Oregon, where they served the Lord through the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene.
