ANU begins 7-week community outreach initiative

by | 16 Jul 2015

Africa Nazarene University, in partnership with the County Government of Kajiado, hosted its inaugural Community Outreach initiative June 19 to 20 at a shopping mall in Ongata Rongai Town. The event was the first of a seven-week exercise that will consecutively visit the major towns of the county, including Kiserian, Ngong, Magadi, Kitengela, Isinya, and Kajiado Town.

Themed "Nurturing our Communities to Transform Lives," the two-day event offered free basic lifestyle disease screening, legal aid, and counseling to residents of Ongata Rongai. The university also hosted a clean-up drive in the Ongata Rongai township. The free services will be replicated in future outreach across the identified towns.

In her speech, ANU Vice Chancellor Leah Marangu asserted the university's commitment to the residents of Kajiado. She assured the residents that the institution will endeavor to develop initiatives that will foster the development of the county and called on the county government to solidify the partnership in the national interest of the county.

The governor of the County Government of Kajiado, David Nkedianye, commended the university for its drive to make a difference in the county. He guaranteed his government's obligation to the well-being of the residents, which will he indicated will be fostered by the various Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives (health screening, tree planting, etc.) to be developed in partnership with ANU.

This Community Outreach marks a new journey that both the university and the county government have embarked on, and both institutions are keen on entrenching the initiative into their annual calendars as a long-term response and service to the community.
