In January 2025, eight leaders and 34 Nazarene missionary kids from five world regions gathered for Rendezvous. Held in a peaceful, nature-filled setting in the Asia-Pacific Region, this event provided high school participants with resources for navigating the transition between cultures, intentional time in Scripture, and opportunities to learn valuable skills to help them thrive in adult life as a cross-cultural person. More than just a retreat, Rendezvous was a place of deep connection, skills development, and renewal.

The Rendezvous event addressed specific challenges that missionary kids face, such as returning to their passport country and leaving the missions field. For many MKs, these transitions can feel overwhelming and isolating, but events like Rendezvous create safe spaces for processing their experiences. This biennial gathering helps each MK to connect with a supportive community of individuals who understand his or her unique journey.

To help participants better understand their relationship patterns and adapt to new cultures, they engaged in an impactful activity called the “Relationship Time-Depth Dilemma.” This concept helped them explore how relationships develop differently depending on cultural context, sparking meaningful discussions throughout the week. In addition to learning this new tool, participants reflected on vulnerability—specifically, how healthy vulnerability can lead to personal and relational growth with God and others.

“Rendezvous helped me open up, and that not only helped me create lifelong relationships but also created a safe space where I got to know God and myself in a way I never had before,” said Qaali, a Rendezvous attendee.

Beyond these discussions, participants engaged in team bonding through various physical activities, including volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and rope courses. These activities were more than just fun; they pushed participants to encourage one another, build trust, and step outside their comfort zones. As missionary kids laughed and cheered each other on, they deepened their friendships in an environment of support and shared experience.

“Rendezvous was an amazing experience where I met incredible people and had a great time,” said Daviana, another attendee. “More importantly, it was an opportunity to grow close to God, learn how to build relationships with God and others, and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves.”

As the week ended, participants left feeling closer to God and one another, excited to see what God would do in their lives. Many participants carried a renewed sense of identity and purpose, inspired by the lessons and friendships they formed at Rendezvous. They are expecting future opportunities to reconnect and continue growing.

“Rendezvous allowed me to grow in relationships with some truly amazing people and helped me gain confidence in being a third culture kid,” said Sarah, another attendee. “It’s an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

Thanks to generous gifts from partners and volunteers, the Church of the Nazarene’s ministry to missionary kids continues to provide retreats, equipping events, counseling, coaching, and more–all with the desire to help each MK become the person God has called him or her to be through life transitions.
