Ron Martin, a board member at Alva Church of the Nazarene, died Thursday from injuries he suffered from a tornado that struck northwest Oklahoma.

A tornado touched down May 24 in Longdale and moved north into Fairview, where Martin was at work on the family's farms. Martin got in his pickup truck and drove to the barn for shelter. The tornado destroyed the barn and lifted the truck with Martin inside the cab, said his son, Kent Martin.

The twister destroyed the farm and blazed a large swath of destruction in the area. The tornado was one in a series of tornadoes that occurred May 22-25 throughout the state.

A group working on the Cedar Springs Church of the Nazarene, about a mile away, went to the area to see if anyone was hurt or needed help. A tornado that same week damaged the church's roof, walls, windows, interior, and property.

The workers found Martin, who was injured, in the truck on the farm and got him help.

Martin, 57, was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and later succumbed to his injuries. He suffered a spinal cord injury that caused further complications, said Kent Martin, who is a board member at Garden City Church of the Nazarene in Garden City, Kansas.

Martin and his wife, Charlene, have been members of Alva Church of the Nazarene for 34 years. The city of Alva is north of Fairview near the Kansas border. The Martins were previous members of the Cedar Springs, which was Martin's childhood church.

Services for Martin are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Alva First Church of the Nazarene. Family members ask that memorial donations be made to Cedar Springs to help rebuild the church.
