MNU alumnus killed in line of duty

Kansas City, Kansas, Police Captain Robert "Dave" Melton, 46, was killed Tuesday while responding to a 911 call about a drive-by shooting.

Melton and several other officers arrived at a public housing complex in Kansas City, Kansas, to confront a group of men firing shots from a car. As the officers approached, several men ran from the vehicle and the other officers pursued the men, one of whom was immediately arrested. Melton continued toward the car and was shot through the window. He was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead. 

A 20-year-old man was charged with capital murder in the case.

Prior to joining KCKPD in 1999, Melton was a deputy with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department. He also served in Iraq and Afghanistan as an enlisted soldier for the Kansas Army National Guard. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, Achievement, Iraqi Campaign, Afghanistan Campaign, NATO Afghanistan Service Medals, and the Combat Action Badge.

Melton graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. 

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Children's Mercy Park stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.
